Rocking Horse Cafe

Nora, Alan and I went to Rocking Horse Cafe (182 8th Ave, at 19th St) for Sunday brunch. It’s $14.95 for a cocktail or juice, entree and coffee or tea until 3:30pm. Alan got the burrito de bistec y huevos (hangar steak, scrambled eggs, avocado, cheese and salsa). Nora got the omelet (eggs with mushrooms, peppers, bacon, cheese, salsa and hash browns). I got the panqueques (griddle cakes with bacon, fruits and syrup).

I loved my panqueques. They were cinnamon masa griddle cakes, so it had a different texture than pancakes. Alan’s grilled hangar steak was pretty tender. Nora’s eggs and hash browns were good too.

I’d definitely go back for brunch, if I’m in that neighborhood on a Sunday morning again.

MacBook Air Commercial

Anyone know who sings the song in the new MacBook Air commercials? It’s pretty catchy.

The commercials make me want to buy one and I’m sure it’s not just me. How can it be so thin and small. My bulky Dell laptop is too heavy for me to lug around!

Union Square Cafe

To celebrate Henry’s return from his world travels, we had a nice dinner out at Union Square Cafe. It was on a list of restaurants we always wanted to visit. What we usually find with these kinds of restaurants is that the appetizers are great, but then our meals are disappointing. Not the case this time! I never pass up on dessert, but everything was so good that I ate way too much and couldn’t fit in any dessert.

We started our meal with beef sirloin carpaccio with with crispy artichokes, rocket and parmigiano reggiano. As I’ve gotten older, I can tolerate eating carpaccio more and this one was really good. Our other appetizer was seared foie gras with toasted brioche, glazed belgian endive and tangerine salad. There is nothing better than seared foie gras. The pate version of foie gras is ok, but seared is the way to go and it did not disappoint. We loved every last bite of it.

For entrees, Henry got the pan - roasted Cod with chestnut puree, greenmarket turnips, wild mushrooms, bacon and brussels sprout leaves and I got the USC’s lobster “shepherd’s pie” with mushrooms, mashed potatoes, spinach, carrots and lobster sauce. Henry’s cod was very good. It was nice and flaky and not overcooked. My shepherd’s pie was to die for. The lobster was not overcooked, but it was probably mostly claw meat and not the actual body, but it was still delicious. The mashed potato was so delicious, but I think it was all the butter.

I still wish I could have gotten dessert, but I was too stuffed.

I would definitely recommend Union Square Cafe. We had a great meal. The only problem we had was the service was a little slow initially. It took awhile before someone came to get our order, but once we placed our order, the food came out very quickly. It also tended to get kind of loud.

Food Bar

I met up with Nora for lunch at Food Bar (149 8th Ave between 17th & 18th St), down by her offices. Why Food Bar? They serve breakfast all day and I was in the mood for some pancakes or french toast. I ended up getting their buttermilk pancakes with fresh berries and maple syrup. Nora got the tomato mozzarella sandwich with fresh basil. We ended up splitting our meals. The pancakes were pretty good. The sandwich was not as good. The mozzarella tasted like it was the Polly-O cheese and not fresh mozzarella. It was very salty and didn’t have the taste of fresh mozzarella which was disappointing. The bread was also charred and tasted burnt so we started eating the sandwich without the bread.

My other complaints with our meals? My pancakes was supposed to come with juice and coffee, I didn’t get either. Nora was supposed to be able to choose her bread, but wasn’t given an option either. We have a lot of other options for next time. But Nora’s been there a few times and does recommend it.

Wii-Mote Problems

Over Thanksgiving, we brought our Wii-motes to Pennsylvania because Ben was bringing her Wii for Jayden, Kaylee and their cousins Xavier, Tristan and Noah to play with. Henry and I left early and left the Wii-motes for the kids (and adults). Shortly after we left, one of them stopped working, but not completely. If you used the Wii-mote to pick a game, the sensor picked it up fine, but when you went to play the game, the sensor could not pick up the motion of the Wii-mote. Bummer right?

I looked online to find out what was wrong with it and how it could be fixed besides buying a new one. I found a few sites where people had the same problem and their solution? “Spank” the Wii-mote. Seriously! I’m not sure what they meant by spanking, but Nora slammed it on my couch a few times and it miraculously started working again. To Monica’s put, what kind of workmanship was put into it if that’s how you fix it.

But I’m happy it’s working again and I don’t have to buy another Wii-mote.
