Nora got into work and told me that her office smelled bad. Then she got an e-mail from her company saying they’re getting complaints about the smell of gas and it is coming from outside the building. She is on the 10th floor and she can smell it!
About 10 minutes later, my fire safety director comes on the loudspeaker to tell us that people have reported the smell of gas and not to be alarmed and that Con Edison is looking into it and it is coming from outside. I am on the 37th floor so I don’t really smell anything. But it concerns me because I am in Midtown and she is in Chelsea and I assume it is the same glass smell.
Then Nora checked on 1010wins and on the top of the site in a red box it says, “Fire officials report they have received numerous calls for a gas odor in Midtown Manhattan. Fire crews are investigating the reports.”
NY1 has an actual article about the smell. It is concentrated on the West Side, as far north as the 80s.
I wonder what is going on and should we be scared.
Updated 11:56AM: So apparently it’s all of NYC that smell it, and so does Jersey. CNN.com also has a story on what’s been going on. Bloomberg said there was a gas leak at Bleecker Street and Sixth Avenue. I think it kind of smells like stale M&Ms here on the 37th floor of my building.
Updated 1/9: It is being reported on CNN.com that New Jersey is the source of the stench that wafted over NYC.
